Zion Church was founded over 150 years ago by German immigrants to Louisville. During the years it has continually changed and remained a vital community of believers in the heart of our city. Our current members are a diverse group of people from all walks of life, economic conditions, age groups and ethnic backgrounds. We are a church looking to the future in order to lead people of our community to the only true source of hope and love and fulfillment. Consistent with our understanding of the Holy Scriptures which explain Christ's own vision for His church, this is our vision of what Zion United Church of Christ will be: A place where the uncompromising "good news of Jesus Christ" is boldly proclaimed and shared within the congregation and in the greater metro area of Louisville. A place where people gather in the act of vibrant, relevant, exciting, moving, worship of God ; where people encounter the Holy Spirit ; and then leave, feeling renewed and strengthened in their own spirit. A place where the hurting, disenfranchised, depressed and frustrated people of our community are encouraged to come and find love, acceptance, guidance, help and hope. A place where people are friendly and joyous, and are truly glad to see one another. A place where people are supportive of everyone who enters, even if they are from different circumstances or racial and ethnic backgrounds. A place where people are encouraged in their Christian walk and equipped to become committed, mature disciples of Christ. A place where people are enabled and sent out to do ministry by finding help in discovering and developing their spiritual gifts and in so doing, find meaning and purpose in life. A place where families can come for nurture, connectedness and support. DOCTRINE ( from our Constitution ) This church acknowledges as its sole head, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, our Savior. We claim all who share in this confession as brothers and sisters. It looks to the Word of God in the Scriptures, and to the presence and power of the Holy Spirit, to prosper its creative and redemptive work in the world. It claims as its own the faith of the historic church expressed in the ancient creeds and reclaimed in the basic insights of the Protestant Reformers. It affirms the responsibility of the Church in each generation to make this faith its own. In accordance with the teaching of our Lord and the practice prevailing among evangelical Christians, it recognizes two Sacraments: Baptism and the Lord's Supper, or Holy Communion. COVENANT We covenant one with another to seek and respond to the Word and the will of God. We purpose to walk together in the way of the Lord, made known and to be made known to us. We hold it to be the mission of the Church to witness to the gospel of Jesus Christ in all the world, while worshiping God and striving for truth, justice and peace. As did our forebears, we depend on the Holy Spirit to lead and empower us. We pray for the coming of the Kingdom of God, and we look with faith toward the triumph of righteousness and eternal life.
