Located in the Ka'u District, the spiritual heart of Hawai'i on the Big Island, Nechung Dorje Drayang Ling (Small Immutable Island of Melodious Sound) is known locally as Wood Valley Temple. It's Retreat Center and Guest House is a wonderful, peaceful place to stay for contemplation, meditation and self discovery; and is a warm home base to explore the island. His Holiness the Dalai Lama has stayed and taught here twice; as have over fifty distinguished lamas of all the major Tibetan Buddhist lineages. Framed by a pristine rainforest and beautiful landscaped grounds, the Retreat Center and Guest House is a quiet sanctuary for rest and reflection. It accommodates up fifteen (15) guests or small groups comfortably in private and shared rooms. There is a large room for group events, plus a screened kitchen, dining room and veranda gives views of the garden and koi fish pond. Programs that have taken place here include Vipassana, massage, permaculture, yoga and meditation. The main temple was built in 1902 by Japanese immigrants who worked in the local sugar plantation. Numberless people from all over the world have visited here. Nechung in Wood Valley truly offers a memorable and unique experience.
