Incorporated in 1841, the Washington Police Department has an administrative support staff that maintains reports generated by the police department. The department supports the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program, which teaches students to avoid peer pressure temptations and drugs. The Washington Police Department s detective division is a specialized unit that is responsible for the follow-up investigations of crimes against persons and property, including homicide, rape, assaults, robbery, burglary, auto theft, child abuse, arson, stealing and fraud. It has a police reserve unit that supplements the work force with volunteer personnel who possess proper state license. The department's traffic division is comprised of a group of officers who are assigned duties to ensure public safety on roads. The Washington Police Department has a police auxiliary unit that is recognized by the state of Missouri and provides various services in cases of emergency deployment.
