The centerpiece of this National Historic Landmark District is the Washington Monument, the first major monument to honor George Washington, the first president of the United States of America. The Monument has been restored by the Mount Vernon Place Conservancy, and was rededicated and reopened on its bicentennial, July 4, 2015.
