Vern Associates was founded in 1994 under the name Vernon Press, Inc Originally, we made our book-packaging services available solely to trade publishers. As our company matured, our reputation for making high-quality illustrated books reached organizations outside the publishing "sector" museums, nonprofit organizations, and corporations, for example. Soon, our custom publications division became our most active and, in keeping with our revised mission, we changed our name to Vern Associates, Inc, in 2002. Peter Blaiwas and Brian Hotchkiss bring to Vern Associates a singular blending of talents and interests Blaiwas in design and production ; Hotchkiss in title development and editorial work. Peter Blaiwas, Creative Director, was Art Director for Jackets and Covers at Addison-Wesley from 1991 to 1994. Before coming to Boston in 1990, he was a Senior Designer at Macmillan, and, prior to that, Designer at Gerstman Meyers, a New York packageand product-design firm. Peter has created highly acclaimed jacket and interior designs for books published by Abbeville Press, Henry Holt, Houghton-Mifflin, and Little, Brown, among others. He has won design awards and recognition for such books as Samuel McIntire: Carving an American Style, Wedded Bliss, and Olmsted's America: An "Unpractical" Man and His Vision of Civilization. His degree in Fine Arts was awarded by Pratt Institute. Brian Hotchkiss, Executive Director, received his degree in art history from Harvard College in 1975. From 1990 to 1994, he was Senior Editor at Bulfinch Press, the illustrated-book division of Little, Brown. Previously he was Editor at Stewart, Tabori & Chang and Birnbaum Travel Guides. For Bulfinch he originated, compiled, and edited several books: three for the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. ( A Renaissance Christmas, The Easter Story, and Noble Beasts: Animals in Art ), plus the highly acclaimed One Hundred Saints. He also acquired and edited such notable projects as Masterworks in Berlin by Colin Eisler and two award-winning volumes of Pablo Neruda's poetry translated by Ken Krabbenhoft and illustrated by Ferris Cook Odes to Common Things and Odes to Opposites. At Stewart, Tabori & Chang, he edited Paintings in the Hermitage, by Colin Eisler, and Roger Kennedy's Greek Revival America, among other titles.
