The Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association, founded in 1952, is a wholesale electric power supplier that is owned by more than 40 cooperatives. The association generates and transports electricity to members in Colorado, Nebraska, New Mexico and Wyoming. It covers a service territory of over 250,000 square miles. The Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association serves nearly 1million consumers. The association employs a staff of approximately 1,000 people. It maintains coal, natural gas, oil-fired and combustion turbine generation facilities. The association purchases federal hydropower from the Western Area Power Administration. Its transmission construction projects include East Montrose Electric System Improvement Project and The High Plains Express Transmission Project. The Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association participates in several collaborative research groups.
