In 2003, Time-Life was acquired by Ripplewood Holdings and ZelnickMedia Corporation and combined with Lillian Vernon Corporation to form Direct Holdings Worldwide. The company sells music and video products under the Time-Life brand, as well as gift, household and children's merchandise under the Lillian Vernon brand. Founded in 1961 as the book division of Time, Time-Life took its name from Time's cornerstone magazines, Time and Life, but remained independent of both. By 1966, Time-Life combined its book offerings with music collections and packaged them as a box set. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the selection of books, music and video grew into all genres. When record labels stopped producing vinyl albums in 1990, Time-Life switched to compact discs only. Time-Life is a creator and direct marketer of book, music, video/DVD and multimedia products. Its products are sold throughout North America, Europe, Australia and Asia through television, print, retail, the Internet, telemarketing and direct sales.
