Sam Flax is the premier art and design supply store in the South. But 100 years ago, Sam Flax was a person. A man with a plan, if you will. He came to America from Eastern Europe in 1898, when he was only seven years old. When he got a bit older, he said “whatever” to the Great Depression and started a successful art store. In the days when up-and-coming artists like Norman Rockwell and Zero Mostel were poor kids trying to get their paint on, Sam told them to “take what they needed, and pay him back when they could.” Sam was all about supporting the arts not only by providing a comprehensive range of supplies but also staying tuned in to the needs of the creative community. 100 years later, his kids and grandkids are still running Sam Flax stores by these same principles.
