Reno Gem and Mineral Society (RGMS) is a nonprofit enterprise encouraging individuals to develop an interest in mineral, earth sciences, and gem hobbies and to participate in field trips that will help identify a wide range of materials. RGMS, based at Sparks, Nevada, offers classes for creating jewelry and finished items from minerals, fossils, and gems. Some of the other classes available are lapidary arts, mineral identification, metal working, hard-stone carving, silver smithing, lost-wax casting, micro-mounting, beading, flint napping, and wire-wrapping. RGMS provides special classes on basket making, bird houses, GPS use, stone and wood carving, and fountains. All these classes are handled by members and some of them are also masters-level teachers. To enhance the learning experience, the mineral society also has a multi-media library.
