Established in 1980, the Marital Posture Training Center is one of the oldest martial arts schools in Philadelphia.
The founder, Thomas Updegrove, is a 7th Degree Black belt in both Kenpo Karate the Joe Lewis Fighting System and is a master instructor in Tai Chi Chuan.
He has studied under some of the best martial arts teachers in the world such as Ed Parker (Founder of The Parker American Kenpo System), Joe Lewis, a world renowned kickboxing legend, and Helson and Royce Gracie, masters of the Gracie Jiu Jitsu system.
Tom is known for his down-to-earth, laid back teaching style.
The Current owner, Ishmael Payne, has studied under Mr. Updegrove since 1989. Mr. Payne's teaching style is like that of his instructor.
He is highly knowledgeable and is very easy going and laid back.
We are not your typical "Martial Arts Club" or "Commercial Martial Arts School."
We view ourselves as an Educational Center for Martial Arts Training.
We are dedicated to educating the public that the martial arts is not only a hobby, but a way of life.
The values of the lessons that martial arts teaches are priceless.
The majority of the students at our school are here to train for black belt and beyond.
