The Ledger Independent was first published on Oct. 1, 1968, following the simultaneous buy-out of the city's two daily newspapers, The Public Ledger and The Daily Independent. By early 1969, Maysville Publishing Corporation was printing one morning edition six days a week under the combined Ledger Independent masthead. In 2002, Lee Enterprises, based in Davenport, Iowa, purchased the Howard Publishing Group that included The Ledger Independent. Lee owns nearly 40 daily newspapers and a joint interest in six others, along with associated online services. It also publishes nearly 200 weekly newspapers, shoppers, and classified and specialty publications. The Ledger Independent is located in Maysville, Ky.
