Capitalizing on the Science of Strengths-Based Learning for Academic Success with personalized education and assessments for students and schools. If parents follow these five steps: 1. find her strengths 2. learn how to apply them to anything she needs or wants to do 3. help her apply them 4. explore as many areas as necessary using her strengths until you see her shine 5. help her follow that light relentlessly they will have a happy, highly successful(maybe rich and famous) child (and eventually adult) in her strength area. If schools follow these five steps: 1. find students’ strengths 2. make sure students know how to use their strengths in every subject needed 3. assess students based on their strengths 4. offer extensions based on their strengths 5. reward success in every area, not just grades they will have high achieving students and alumni who reflect well on their school via their test scores, contest winnings and awards, extra-curricular achievements, college admissions, outstanding careers, or even entrepreneurial leadership. You, as a parent, can use this program in homeschool (which is ideal) or you can apply it to your child’s current academic situation. It doesn’t matter if they go to public, private, montessori, or charter school, this will work in most every class. Of course idealistically, I’d like to see students use this fully to maximize their potential by using this system exclusively, but it can at least be started within your child’s or your school's current academic context. The science behind this system makes every piece of education easier, more effective, and more fun. Fun? What? If it was supposed to be fun it would be called EDUCAFUN. But scientifically speaking...it should be. This science behind my research in education, and this system, does in fact make every piece of education easier, more effective, and more fun. I know you don’t hear corporate leaders saying, “Gee, I hope my employees are having fun today!” But you do hear them say “statistics show employee engagement increases productivity—how can we get employees more engaged?” It’s true that scientists have shown the brain works more effectively when a person is engaged and not stressed (ie having fun/relaxed) (http://pps.sagepub.com/content/5/4/378.abstract is just a tiny snippet of some of this research). The bottom line is that we know how the brain works, and we need to cater to that instead of fight it. That’s where I come in (insert fanfare and flourish of Super Woman cape here). Think of the three biggest complaints in education: 1. Teachers are overworked and underpaid 2. Schools can’t afford anything new (technology, books, building renovations, teachers, etc) 3. Students are overwhelmed. They want to be successful (their families want that too) but are overwhelmed with sports starting at 7:00AM and extracurriculars and homework running well past 10:00PM with no time to “be a kid” or “have fun” or even have a healthy lunch and dinner. Their children are miserable, not up to par academically, and hate school. And now they say he/she has ______ disorder, ADHD, and processing difficulties. HOW CAN I COPE? WILL THEY EVER BE ABLE TO LEARN? This philosophy solves all three. How you ask? Read more on my blog at www.LawhonEducation.org *Don't believe me? Read the below links for a glimpse, or Google "learning and the brain"...The sheer amount of information is overwhelming. And a lot of it is piecemeal. But, I'm happy to report I have put all of it into one, simple system for you so you really don't have to drudge through all this technical
