Ruth Summers is a passionate and experienced attorney who handles trials and litigation in criminal, juvenile, and civil court. Ms. Summers represents clients at all stages of the legal system, and assists those involved in criminal investigations as targets or witnesses. Ms. Summers has handled hundreds of adult criminal and juvenile cases and has successfully litigated not guilty verdicts and outright dismissals for her clients on a wide range of charges, including DUI, drug charges, domestic violence, assault, vehicular assault, aggravated robbery, sexual assault, and homicide. Ms. Summers is an experienced and prepared attorney in civil, appellate, and post-conviction matters, and has won cases in state and federal court, as well as the Colorado Court of Appeals, the Colorado Supreme Court, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit.
Ms. Summers is a Colorado native who attended the University of Colorado School of Law, where she was Associate Editor on Law Review. While earning her degree, Ms. Summers received internships as the Colorado Supreme Court, the Colorado Civil Rights Division, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. After earning her law degree Ms. Summers worked as an attorney for the Colorado State Public Defender, where she defended hundreds of adults and juveniles, and served on the Community Corrections Committee and the Juvenile Community Review Board. Since founding the Law Office of Ruth Summers in 2013, Ms. Summers has expanded her passion for defending the rights of others into the civil context, where she fights for clients facing denial of life insurance benefits. In the “stunning” 2020 decision in Amica Life Insurance Company v. Wertz, Ms. Summers persuaded the Colorado Supreme Court that a Colorado statute violated the State Constitution, forcing multiple life insurance companies to pay death benefits that they had previously denied her clients on the basis of suicide.
