The story of KONG began with a German Shepherd named Fritz who enjoyed chewing on rocks, an activity that wore down his teeth and worried his owner, Joe Markham. One day, Markham was disassembling his van and started to randomly throw parts at Fritz to coax him away from eating rocks. Nothing worked until a suspension part was thrown Fritz s way. Markham refined the rubber suspension tube into a super-strong rubber formula toy that dogs could chew on and not cause damage to their teeth. KONG also manufactures a number of other toys for dogs, cats, birds, ferrets and horses that include rubber toys, such as the Classic KONG, tennis toys, plush toys, treats, catnip toys, swizzles, teasers for cats and grooming items. KONG is headquartered in Golden, Colo.
