Marshall/KMK serves as consultant in architectural acoustics to architects, engineers and owners undertaking new buildings or renovations. More than 2, 000 successful projects, including multipurpose auditoriums, theaters, recital halls, houses of worship, legislative chambers, ballrooms and conference centers, airports, coliseums and stadiums in this country and abroad, many designed by leading architects, testify to our skill and experience. The firm was founded in 1971 by three colleagues with complementary interests in acoustics, performing arts and architecture. The firm is now composed of L. Gerald Marshall and Joanna Stachowicz. Tom Knauss is M/kmk's sound system designer. There has been a deliberate commitment to remaining small so that essentially all consulting is performed "hands-on" by senior consultants. Marshall/KMK's expertise relates to matters of scale, siting and adjacencies; construction systems and methods; materials and finishes; performance standards; and quality checkpoints. Working directly with the design team, we present our recommendations in conferences, letter-reports and drawings. In unusual projects, computer modeling and auralization studies can be used to assist analyzing the acoustic behavior of design proposals. Our checkpoints include review of drawings and specifications at all phases of project design, review of shop drawings and appropriate submittals during construction, and performance of final tests and adjustments in completed projects. As a member of the National Council of Acoustical Consultants M/KMK welcomes the opportunity to collaborate with other specialists in the field. SERVICES As consultant to the architect or owner Marshall/KMK addresses the following aspects of a new space or structure: We advise on room sizes, shapes and finishes appropriate to distribute sound uniformly, control echoes, and permit proper reverberation time, frequency balance, and early-to-reverberant sound ratios.
