Steve Stefano founded Joico International in 1975 and started a chain of salons in southern California. Joico scientists and salon professionals introduced keratin protein, the substance that makes up hair's natural fabric, in hair care products. This ingredient, called Triamine Complex, became the foundation for all Joico hair care products. Styling products were added to Joico's product mix in 1998. Joico also makes and distributes the K-Pak Collection, an entire line of reconstructing products, including a shampoo, conditioner, leave-in protectant, protective serum and the original K-Pak Deep Penetrating Reconstructor. In December 2001, Joico International became part of the Zotos International family, one of the professional beauty industry leaders. It manufactures and markets a range of hair care, hair color and texture service options for salons and salon professionals.
