Neuro-optometry is a subfield of optometry that evaluates patients with visual complaints and double vision secondary to acquired brain injury (concussion, trauma, stroke, etc) and/or neurological disease (Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, myasthenia gravis, Lyme disease, etc). The neuro-optometric examination is a comprehensive and problem-focused evaluation of all the aspects of vision from the eye to the brain that can be affected by damage to the central and peripheral nervous system. These diagnostic tests may include and/or evaluate how well the eye "sees", how well the eyes work together as a team (oculomotor), how the eyes behave when the head is moving (vestibular-oculomotor), and how the brain interprets what they eyes see (vision processing). The treatment plan depends upon the diagnosis and the patient's personal visual needs, abilities, and goals. Treatment options may include prism glasses, tinted lenses, orthoptics vision therapy, and patient education.
