It houses various agencies, including the Appalachian Independence Center, Lutheran Family Services of Virginia and Mountain Community Action Program. The center is a part of Helping Overcome Poverty's Existence, which works toward the reduction of conditions contributing to poverty in southwestern Virginia. Incorporated in 1993, the parent organization is a human service corporation that improves the overall well-being of individuals and families. It operates in Wythe, Bland, Smyth, Carroll and Grayson in southwestern Virginia. Helping Overcome Poverty's Existence is certified by Virginia Community Housing Development Organization.
