About Us
Our 25 bed Critical Access Hospital is connected to medical clinics and a long term care center. The medical campus is also home to an assisted living facility that is conncected to the hospital and clinics.
Physicians
There are 18 physicians on the active medical staff and they have immediate contact with specialists in area hospitals for consultation. The hospital and nursing home employ over 300 people.
Emergency Services
The Emergency Department is staffed by physicians and nurses 24 hours-a-day, along with additional personnel at designated times. Air and ground ambulances are availabe for those needing a higher level of care. Highly skilled physicians and medical professionals from larger hospitals across the nation are attracted to this area by the quality of life they find here.
Hospital Accommodations
The hospital was designed to aid in the restoration of health. Large private rooms support patient privacy. Soft colors, large windows with nature views and local art work help bring peace of mind. A sleeping couch in each patient room allows someone to stay with a young child or critically ill relative, in addition, attractive waiting areas support family involvement. An active volunteer organization assists staff in meeting the needs of patients and their families.
Governance
The Governing Board of Hayward Area Memorial understands that skilled medical personnel, specialized services, advanced medical equipment, prevention programs, long term care and assisted living continue to be important priorities for the community. It is through these far-sighted individuals and dedicated staff, that the mission of Hayward Area Memorial will be carried forward.
Hayward Area Memorial Hospital is licensed by the State of Wisconsin, Department of Health and Family Services (DHFS). The Hayward Area Memorial Hospital sits upon land where an Indian Boarding School...built and operated by the Federal Government...once stood. The Boarding School opened its doors on September 1, 1901.
The complex began with a school, two dormitories and a warehouse. Later, a large barn, root cellar and other farm buildings were added and used to teach modern farming methods to students who spent half a day in vocational training. Administration buildings including offices, another dormitory and a residence for the superintendent were added.
In early August, 1929, work began on the construction of an Indian Hospital on the government owned property. The Sawyer County Record, dated August 21, 1929, stated that,"The building, of brick and tile, is considered modern in every detail." The two-story, 32-bed hospital served the government complex until 1953.
