Front Range Equine Rescue began in 1997 and was incorporated as a Colorado non-profit on 8/1/97. Front Range Equine Rescue began as an all volunteer organization with Board members providing the initial foster homes. A small self-care facility soon housed several of the incoming rescue horses as well. Over the years, Front Range has worked hard to increase its capacity and was able to purchase a 40-acre facility in Larkspur in 2006. A major gift campaign in 2007-2009 allowed for further expansion with the purchase of 81 additional acres in Larkspur late in 2009. Horses were also kept at 2-3 other private facilities in Colorado. In late 2014, Front Range Equine Rescue expanded its rescue program efforts to Virginia. Currently over 20 horses reside at a foster farm in Bristow, VA. These horses were saved from low-end auctions, a kill buyer, off the track, and from owner surrender. At this time, the majority of Front Range’s rescue/rehab/training assessment/adoption services are being operated from Virginia. In October 2015, Front Range Equine Rescue moved its headquarters to Ocala, FL. This transition included the administrative function and most of the retired horses. Front Range Equine Rescue no longer owns facilities in Colorado, but continues its advocacy, education, and events under the supervision of Board members. Front Range continues its long standing partnership with Shiloh Acres Horse Rescue (Ft. Collins) to save at-risk horses from the slaughter pipeline. There are no changes to Front Range Equine Rescue’s mission, goals, programs, activities, or national campaigns to responsibly end horse slaughter and “Save the Wild Horses.”
