Established in 1937, the Dawson Public Power District is one of the largest rural systems in Nebraska. It maintains more than 23,000 electric meters and over 5,700 miles of power lines. The district employs more than 80 workers and is a member of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association and the Nebraska Rural Electric Association. The Dawson Public Power District purchases electricity from Nebraska Public Power District and distributes it to customers in Dawson, Buffalo, Gosper, Lincoln, Custer, Sherman and Frontier counties in Nebraska. It also offers meter reading and load management services, as well as business development assistance programs. In addition, the Dawson Public Power District provides residential and agricultural surge suppression products.
