Capital Region Upright MRI was established in June, 2006. The facility is equipped with the UPRIGHT® Multi-Position™ MRI, manufactured by FONAR Corporation in Melville, New York. All of our reading radiologists are board-certified and our facility is accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR). Because of the UPRIGHT® MRI’s unique magnet configuration, there is nothing in front of the patient’s face or directly overhead to create a “closed-in” feeling. Patients no longer have to suffer from claustrophobic reactions commonly associated with “tube” or “tunnel” MRI scanners, even some so-called Open MRI scanners. In fact, UPRIGHT® MRI users routinely scan patients that were unable to tolerate other MRI scanners or who simply couldn’t fit into them, including patients weighing as much as 500 pounds. The FONAR UPRIGHT® Multi-Position™ MRI is not just for claustrophobic patients. Unfortunately, the overwhelmingly positive responses from patients to the extraordinary patient-friendly environment of the scanner, especially claustrophobic and very large patients , can overshadow the scanner’s most important feature – Multi-Position MRI imaging. The UPRIGHT® MRI is the only MRI scanner than can scan patients in any position, including sitting, standing, bending (for flexion and extension) or lying down. This unmatched feature is made possible by the scanner’s unique magnet configuration. With the opposing magnetic poles oriented vertically, the generous space between them accommodates a special motorized patient bed that can rotate the patient from recumbent to upright. The UPRIGHT® MRI meets special needs as well. For patients who are physically unable to lie down, the UPRIGHT® MRI is the only scanner that can accommodate them. Young children are frequently anesthetized for their MRI scans in order to prevent motion artifacts. Since children can sit comfortably watching TV in the UPRIGHT® MRI, the motion problem can be eliminated, thereby avoiding the added expenses and risks of anesthesia.
