Bear Island Paper Company is a subsidiary of the White Birch Paper Company, which operates four pulp and paper mills, three in Canada and one in the United States. Together, these mills produce more than 1.3 million tons of newsprint and directory paper with up to 50 percent recycled content. Headquartered in Connecticut, White Birch Paper is a privately owned, family-run business that manufactures and ships paper products to customers in North America and all over the world. The company is the third largest producer of newsprint in North America, offering newspaper publishers a range of high quality newsprint. With a total of seven paper machines the company is capable of producing different widths of newsprint. Constructed in 1979, Bear Island produces newsprint paper from wood fiber and recycled fiber in various basis weights ranging from 40 grams to 48.8 grams. Its recycling system is a multi-stage two-loop process that runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week, converting old newspapers and magazines into high-grade recycled pulp.
