The ranch was started by a private owner several years ago and was recently purchased in July 2009 by the Oglala Sioux Tribe of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Our goal here at the Badlands Ranch and Resort is to help others have a wonderful experience including a family-like environment, friendly service and activities enjoyed by all ages. We are situated at the base of the majestic Badlands National Park. The Badlands received it's name from the Lakota People and was originally called "Mako Sica" which translates into bad land. The land is carved on a daily basis from the elements such as wind and rain and together with colorful striations of minerals, creates a marvelous canvas of art. Arguments have been made that the Badlands were prehistorically, a water-filled area and there has been evidence in the form of aquatic-life fossils which have been found such as sea shells and aquatic rhinos. The distinct contradiction is that the area also housed dry land animals as evidenced by fossils such as the paleolithic camel. Quite a geological mystery really. Now that we have shared a little bit of history, let's talk about the Ranch. Here at the Badlands Ranch and Resort, we have a fully equipped RV park which is partly shaded by beautiful evergreens, a playground for the little ones and many activities for everyone. Our swimming pool is a 4-ft. above-ground oval pool and is maintained on a daily basis. There are a variety of cabins and rooms as well as our main lodge available for your lodging needs so check out the lodging descriptions and we probably will have what you want. We have picnic tables and grills available for the use of our guests. There is an open pavilion located next to the barn and is on a first- come- first- serve basis unless prior arrangements have been made with management.
