Holistic therapies can include but are not limited to: traditional Chinese medicines, acupuncture and western herbs, chiropractic or structural manipulations, applied kinesiology, massage and touch therapy, Aryuvedic therapy, iridology, crystal therapy, color therapy, aroma therapy, positive thought and prayer, homeopathy, Bach flower therapy, vitamin therapy, mineral therapy and glandular therapy, food or dietary therapy, exercise and the judicious use of pharmaceutical drugs and surgery. The idea which makes each of the therapies 'holistic' is how they are applied to the whole individual. Holistic medicine focuses on understanding the patient as a unique individual whose mental, emotional, spiritual and physical selves are an integrated whole. Homeopathic remedies can be made from plants, animal or insect substances, minerals, viruses or bacteria. They are energy patterns of the original substance. Homeopathic remedies work at the level of the 'vital force' of the individual and stimulate the patient to heal their body of the illness pattern that is trying to be established. A strong vital force is necessary for them to work the best. Single remedies or multiple remedies in a 'formula' can be used to help an individual suppress or palliate their symptoms. The greatest potential for homeopathic remedies is in their ability to help some individuals cure themselves of their illness. Classical homeopathy is the use of single homeopathic remedies, usually in succession, to create the impetus for an individual to heal themselves. In our physical body there is an energy flow along a certain pathway called meridians. The energy that flows through these meridians feeds the different 'parts' of our body. A blockage or diversion of energy can cause an excess, deficiency or stagnation situation. This imbalance can lead to pain, numbness, heat or cold sensation, disturbance of normal organ function, etc. The individual can then manifest different 'syndromes' or diseases. Acupuncture can be used to restore the normal energy flow and therefore help restore optimum health. Stainless steel needles can be used at acupuncture points to tonify, sedate or otherwise manipulate the energy of the body. Acupuncture points can be stimulated with electrical impulses, electro-acupuncture. This technique is found most helpful in paralysis problems in which the nerves are still intact, but are not passing the impulses from the spinal cord correctly. For example: radial nerve paralysis, atomy of the bladder and some forms of rear limb paralysis. Acupuncture is the use of a liquid to inject into the acupuncture points. Vitamin B-12, lidocaine, normal saline and homeopathic remedies are often used for acupuncture. There have been very good results in pets with back pain due to vertebral spondylosis and pets with hip pain due to arthritis or hip dysplasia. Infra-red or helium neon light sources are used in lacer or laser acupuncture.
